Hi all,
I have a Raspberry Pi 2 with Sonarr and CouchPotato installed.
I have always used torrents, downloading them with Transmission.
Now I am planning to change over to Usenet.
Any suggestions on Usenet providers and which downloader to use?
Thanks

Great idea to use usenet and torrent as a backup. I usually recommend UsenetServer with the year subscription (after you've verified you like it) because you get free VPN with an annual subscription. I use UsenetServer as my primary and Astraweb as my block account. However, recently users have had issues with Astraweb's unlimited accounts so I cannot recommend them currently.
If you are only looking to use it for new content then Frugal is a good choice. However, do note that their retention is lower and is reflected in the price of the service.
You will find that most usenet services are very similar with regards to takedowns and retention, being choosy starts to matter when you are trying to max out fast connections.

Thanks Mike,
Couple more questions than.
As I understand it, this block account means you buy an amount of data in advanced. What extra does it offer if you have an unlimited account at UsenetServer?
As downloader I guess I should just install NZBGet?
And wondering if installing their VPN (or any VPN) on my Raspberry is simple? Had VPN's installed before on Windows without problems but Linux still has a lot of mysteries to me.
Thanks.

Yes a block account is exactly that, a chunk of data blocks you are allowed to get from another usenet provider. Basically with usenet a lot of data is moved around and despite their best integrity checks, sometimes blocks go bad (this is why there are par2 files) so having a block account means you can (hopefully) get the remaining blocks from the other server. Having a block account can also help with DMCA takedowns but this is contingent upon how much the usenet provider damaged the offending binaries - if it was all blocks were taken down then a block account won't help.
NZBGet is one option, Sabnzbd is another, you will find configuration guides for both on the main site. NZBGet is the lighter option so it is usually more appropriate for the Pi 2.
I actually have a guide for setting up the UsenetServer VPN on Linux here - IPVanish is owned by the operators of UsenetServer.

So I have been setting up my Usenet, well actually 2 months ago, but today started my year long subscription and also installed IPVanish.
Just one question regarding that, what if I have to change the server? Do I just have to download the configuration for that server and change the server in the autoconnect file? Or is there more to it?

I have Astraweb and it has been working good as far as I know.
Unlimited DSL $15 for 2 Months Special.
(They have special offers so don't sign up on the regular links)

@Yveske all you have to do is grab the country that you want and change the script to use that country. It should be as simple as that. Let me know if it isn't and we'll troubleshoot.
@manne I am using UsenetServer as unlimited and Astraweb block account and rarely have issues.

@Mike I was referring to your comment "However, recently users have had issues with Astraweb's unlimited accounts so I cannot recommend them currently."

My bad @manne that was in December if I remember correctly. I personally never had issues but people on reddit were complaining. Haven't seen any complaints lately though.

@Mike I first tried getting the configuration file from the right server and then also change to the right server in the autoconnect settings but this showed no ip and I couldn't connect to the internet.
Secondly I tried just changing the server in the autoconnect settings and that just made me no longer use vpn and show my own ip-adres and I think on start screen it had something failed with rc.local, I just noticed the red failed but it goes so fast.
So that would have been too easy.
The reason I want to try some other servers is because I notice I only have half my download speed with the one I have now.
I took a Astraweb account today as block account and I do notice that the speed went all the way down at moments to go back to normal again after.
