Check out syslog for any hints about the crashing.
Using RasPlex will definitely solve it. One pitfall with Plex is the plex.tv silliness and using Plex clients that either do not have the hardware capability to play all formats or incomplete Plex apps which do not take advantage of the hardware on which they are installed. RasPlex will only in rare cares require transcoding if there is a video codec it doesn't recognize.Code:
/var/log/syslog
I will do some searching in those logs.
Re: RasPlex, it sounds like it could be overall better? Curious if it would also solve the freezing/stalling issues I'm having (see below). And just noticed with the CEC remote stuff, I could keep *1 remote*! Wow.
While I have your ear, the other issue I've had related to this issue is playback stalling on the tv app. I've tried to look for it happening when the CPU is pegged or when there's a lot of network traffic, or with certain file types, but haven't recognized a clear pattern yet. One thing that helped on certain files was switching the plex sound settings on the TV to AC3. But otherwise it's remained mysterious. Some things I've tried:
- moving the transcoder temp directory to the SATA attached external drive
- Making the transcoder default duration 60 instead of 120
- Upping the transcoder default buffer 120 instead of 60
Anyway, thanks for lending your expertise. Among the people I know IRL, I know the most about HTPCs so there's no one else I can turn to except places like this! Much appreciated. And hope you have a good new years.
