i'm in the same boat as the threat starter. I finished the split-tunnel guide for ubuntu 16.04 ( cool guide btw).
everything works great so far.. Now i want to run kodi as vpn user but came across many problems.
kodi needs alot of permissons., i.e for soundcard. can i safely granted that acess to the vpn user /group ? Is anyone here runnning kodi properly through split-tunnel and would help ?

I don't run Kodi as VPN user, but I think it should be enough to run Kodi as vpn user.
If I'm correct, the user who runs Kodi (in most cases user kodi) needs to be in the following groups: cdrom, audio, video, plugdev, users, dialout, dip, input
You can run Kodi as user vpn.
I don't see why would it be insecure to run Kodi as vpn user, and add vpn user to these groups. That would mean that groups listed here can have access to VPN tunnel. Pretty much the same as with permissions for the automation services like Sonarr or download clients like Deluge. I don't run Sonarr as vpn user, but as my regular user. So the my regular user is added to vpn user's group and vice versa, to properly handle permissions for content created by vpn user and regular user.

Looks like Kodi is owned by the root user for now. Kodi user is specified in an init.d script i think.
Thanks
