Hi,
I've got the split VPN working (with thanks to Drake for massive help and fresh perspective) and I've started trying to configure Deluge. Worked my way through all of the steps until I get to:
Code:
sudo nano /home/vpn/.config/deluge/web.conf
and find myself confronted by a blank file.
I've checked that deluged is running as a service (systemctl list-units), but when I stop it, there's still a blank web.conf. I'm using all of the appropriate setup ( vpn user and group, etc.) and it has worked for the split-VPN, but web.conf isn't appearing, even after a reboot...
I'm starting to get the impression that Linus Torvald is targeting me for torture...

I think the problem will be that Deluge daemon and Web UI are not yet running, since the created systemd units have been enabled to start on boot, but not until the next boot they need to be started manually. That is actually not clear from the guide, so I will update this part. Sorry, just realized you had a reboot already.
Can you check the log files and provide me the Deluge logs?
And check if Deluge services are running fine, what is the output of:
Code:
sudo systemctl status deluged.service
and
Code:
sudo systemctl status deluge-web.service
Also check if Deluge is running as vpn user, give me the output of:
Code:
sudo ps aux | grep deluge
We will make this work too, don't worry

Hiya,
The output from:
Code:
sudo systemctl status deluged.service
is:
● deluged.service - Deluge Bittorrent Client Daemon
Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/deluged.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: active (running) since Tue 2016-11-08 10:38:51 UTC; 2s ago
Main PID: 2398 (deluged)
CGroup: /system.slice/deluged.service
└─2398 /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/deluged -d -l /var/log/deluge/daemon.log -L warning
Code:
sudo systemctl status deluge-web.service
Gives:
● deluge-web.service - Deluge Bittorrent Client Web Interface
Loaded: loaded (/etc/systemd/system/deluge-web.service; enabled; vendor preset: enabled)
Active: active (running) since Tue 2016-11-08 09:08:48 UTC; 1h 32min ago
Main PID: 1200 (deluge-web)
CGroup: /system.slice/deluge-web.service
└─1200 deluge-web
and the sudo ps aux grep command gives:
vpn 1200 0.0 2.8 126048 57828 ? Ss 09:08 0:01 deluge-web
vpn 2398 0.5 2.7 283908 55584 ? Ssl 10:38 0:00 /usr/bin/python /usr/bin/deluged -d -l /var/log/deluge/daemon.log -L warning
plex 2472 0.0 0.0 16740 940 pts/0 S+ 10:41 0:00 grep --color=auto deluge
And... I've just tested it and I'm sure that your emails are some sort of "Ubuntu Placebo" because the darned thing is working now!
Seriously - I've tried this five times this morning and the .conf thing was empty. I've read your reply, followed the code and - as f by magic - it's working!

Based on the logs everything is fine!
I don't know why it didn't work for the first few times, the commands I sent you are only to show the status of the services, they don't make any difference. I'm glad it is working, and I wish we could always resolve issues like this!
Now I guess you are using the plain version of nginx. I strongly recommend to configure nginx reverse proxy with LE certificate, and harden the nginx security by following THIS guide. If it doesn't work for some reason, just drop me a line, and I will send some Ubuntu magic Just kidding, you are doing a great work!
Once everything configured, let me know how is it working for you!

Drake,
Again - many thanks. I've had a look at the nginx configuration, but I'm going to be out on my own on that one, as I have my own SSL certificate and I don't expect you to write a new section just for me
What I will do, however, is this. If I can get nginx to work on my own domain with my own SSL I will give you my guide through, just in case there are other masochists around like me.

If you have your own certificates, it is the same, juat leave out the let's encrypt part of the guide as you obviously don't need the certifocates from them. Adjust the path to where you keep your certs. And then follow the rest of the guide with hardening nginx security. One thing I can remember now, is to create dh key to match your cert key size, so if you have 2048 bit keys, then create 2048 bit dh key. Let us know your results!
