Hi again,
I have got the first part of the tutorial working properly, so started on part 2. No problems following the tutorial, but I can't get transmission to run. I get a 502 bad gateway error from nginx. I've typed in systemctl status transmission-daemon.service to see what's happening and get the following:-
● transmission-daemon.service - LSB: Start or stop the transmission-daemon.
Loaded: loaded (/etc/init.d/transmission-daemon; bad; vendor preset: enabled)
Drop-In: /etc/systemd/system/transmission-daemon.service.d
└─local.conf
Active: active (exited) (Result: exit-code) since Sun 2016-10-30 17:22:01 GMT; 57min ago
Docs: man ystemd-sysv-generator(8)
Process: 25166 ExecStop=/etc/init.d/transmission-daemon stop (code=exited, status=0/SUCCESS)
Process: 25174 ExecStart=/usr/bin/transmission-daemon -f --log-error -g /etc/transmission-daemon (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
Main PID: 25174 (code=exited, status=1/FAILURE)
CGroup: /system.slice/transmission-daemon.service

Oct 30 17:22:01 ubuntu systemd[1]: transmission-daemon.service: Main process exited, code=exited, status=1/FAILURE
Now I really don't have a clue what any of that means! What may be of use is that I previously installed Transmission (maybe before I upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04) and didn't use it because the vpn stopped Plex working outside my network - hence wanting to get this working so I can torrent on the same box as my plex server. I'm wondering if any old scripts might be interfering with it starting?

Will fix old issue.
Thanks for the reply. I have done the above and it removed the cli version of transmission (the old one I guess) but I still get the same error.
I've also tried to see the status of nginx with systemctl status nginx.service and get the following:-

So I guess that Nginx is working, but the Transmission daemon is still having problems?

Hi, and thanks for the reply. The output is as follows:-
david 29554 0.0 0.0 14228 1012 pts/1 S+ 20:00 0:00 grep --color=auto transmission
(david being the user other than vpn)

If I got it right, then david is your regular user, so you have followed the guide and you also have vpn user on your system? If this is the case, then something is wrong, Transmission is running as no vpn user.
You are using Ubuntu 16.04 or Debian 8?
Please give me the output of
Code:
grep /etc/systemd/system/transmission-daemon.service.d/local.conf

Hi,
Yes, david is the regular user and a user called vpn has been set up. I followed the tutorials and I am using Ubuntu 16.04 on a headless server that I ssh into.
I copied and pasted the code above, but there is no output - it just hangs. I had a look in /etc/systemd/system/transmission-daemon.service.d and local.conf exists. Trying grep local.conf from within it's folder dues exactly the same - sits there with no output

This is very strange. There should be some output, at least an error or something. Did you use sudo?
Code:
sudo grep /etc/systemd/system/transmission-daemon.service.d/local.conf
I suspect that Transmission on your system is not configured properly to be run as vpn user.
You did use the ppa from the guide to install Transmission?

I seem to be running into the same issue as David. I know this thread is probably dead, but I figured I would see if there was any chance of revitalization. I have setup nginx, the only issue I am having now is that I assume the transmission-daemon is not running as vpn as I am also getting the response from the initial grep showing my normal account, however, the most recent grep will not execute with/without sudo.
Edit: I appended the "sudo ps aux | " to the beginning and it worked and gave me "root" as the user, so it seems that the "chown" commands I ran from the guide did not take?
Any insight you can provide on how I should go about remedying this issue would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!!
Edit2: The "systemctl status transmission-daemon.service" command showed up fine when I had initially run through the guide.
Edit3: By deleting the settings.json file and having Transmission re-create the file, I am getting successful status of the transmission-daemon service. Attempting to modify settings to match those in the guide and will update once I have further answers.
FINAL: It seems like that has fixed it! Now when I run the code below I get the answer that vpn is using the transmission-daemon service!
Code:
sudo ps aux | grep transmission
Time to test this bad boy out with my Ombi -> Sonarr/CouchPotato setup!!
THANKS HTPCGUIDES!

A bit late to the party, but just wanted to post here that after working through the guide, I couldn't connect to Transmission through Nginx. I kept getting a canned Transmission error page about adding editing whitelist. Also, changes I made to the settings file wouldn't stick (making sure service was stopped before editing didn't seem to help). After deleting the file and having it respawn a new settings file as suggested here, changes stuck and am now able to access Transmission. Just posting here for future time-travelers.
