This is why I think it is a Rasplex issue, good to hear you have a test setup, it is something I recommend everybody does no matter the system

i was going to buy another pi2 to replace the pi b+ anyway.

I think you'd have to let the Rasplex coders know, did Plexbmc yield different results?

Plexbmc on the same pi b+ has no problems playing 1080p DTS mkv h264.
So the hardware isn't the problem it seems.

Then you will need to get in touch with the Rasplex crew, at least you narrowed down the issue, not much more I can do if you want to use rasplex

Rasplex just looks much nicer. Raspbmc doesn't appear to be as feature rich as rasplex, in terms of artwork, metadata etc.

i'll tinker with the pi to see if i can make it work better.
the raspbmc install has the pi overlocked to "Fast", so i'll see if that setting makes rasplex work any better.
what version of plex runs on the mk808b?

mk808b plus runs Android so the latest Android Plex app version
