So I haven't tried changing the server yet but I do notice that the one I was trying just doesn't seem to work, even though he is updated on the openvpn website. I went back to a backup right before I installed and this server didn't work on a fresh installed openvpn either so I guess that is the problem.
I haven't tried yet to change the server, too late now, but I will give it a try later on. I keep you updated just ignore the previous post. Except the part about Astraweb, I still have that problem and the problem with only half the speed as well.

If you are connected to the VPN you will lose speed. Depending on the distance between your location and the VPN server.

Well. Disconnect and see if the speed goes up. If yes, the problem is within your VPN / client. Which DNS are you using? Have you tried Google's?

@manne if I'm disconnected I have almost double the speed. I'm using the Google DNS and when I try the same server on my Windows laptop I have hardly any speed loss. But if I read around I seem to read more with the same issue and that it seems like it's a Raspberry Pi issue.
@mike so it's probably not necessary to change the server. I have been trying the same things again with a working server but didn't seem to work. Also tried to make a new folder, etc/openvpn2, and tried to setup a second server up there and made rc.local connect do that one but that didn't do the trick either.
Been googling a bit too and I just can't find anything about it, changing a server on Linux, so maybe it just can't be done. Not sure, I'm just out of ideas.

Yveske check your check your [s]check check your check your bind address if you are using the script. I updated it not that long ago to not change the bind address anymore after connecting to the VPN.

@mike ,hope that this is what you mean, I commented out the bind address all together but nothing changed, still the same problems.

@manne apparently the forum wants me to become a rapper
veske I meant the meant meant the meant the section in the script that sets the bind address, not the bind address in the settings.json in case that is what you thought i meant.
I could be the heaviness of encryption from OpenVPN that the Pi can't handle or the USB sharing ethernet limitation.

Haha. You did it again.
I think I know what you are doing. I will do it here but with space between.
username : username username : username :
This may be the reason of your rapping skills
You see. I found a bug. @mike
At sign username :
Skip this sign : after the username and the problem is gone.
At least it's a workaround
Or you are using a username that not exist after the at sign. /typo
