Hi all,
I know there are a lot of threads about the "Server not powerful enough" issue. However, it affects me only when I use Chromecast - using the phone (Android) or browser
I am using the Plex image for Raspberry Pi from the website ("Raspberry Pi 2 Minibian PMS Latest", Plex version 0.9.11.16).
Initially, I also got the usual "Server not powerful enough" message.
However, after modifying plex.js and I changing my folder for transcoding to a USB drive it is working fine using a browser or phone.
But whenever I try to cast it to my Chromecast 2 using the Android Plex app, I get the message. I am only able to play files that do not require transcoding.
I have tried it with different files, but it seems like all files that require transcoding do not work. I am not using subtitles.
I would be grateful if anyone could give me some directions of how to solve this problem.
I saw that there are people using the Chromecast with Plex.
Cheers,
Lukas

Lukas, can you link me to the place where people are using the Chromecast with Plex on the Pi 2?
You can see in the other thread that with the newer version of Plex modifying the plex.js doesn't work unfortunately.
It may be the Android plex app, try this:
In the Android plex app go to settings and choose General
Choose Device media profile and then Media profile
Mark Force Direct Play and try again
If that fails try External Player
Let us know if this works.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for the fast reply.
In my version of Plex the plex.js workaround still seems to work. If I don't make the changes, I am not even able to play the files on my phone or browser.
If I force direct play, the files also won't even play on my phone. Instead, the phone seems to crash.
Chromecast still gives the same "not powerful enough" message.
Some people seem to be able to cast to Chromecast:
1) https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/173363...-subtitles
2) https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/165298...ful-enough
(Some people say rebooting PMS, Chromecast & the app might fix the error, but it is not the case for me)

Can you play the same videos that do not work in the Plex app itself? This will help eliminate whether it is the Chromecast or the Android app. When you cast through the Plex app it may be just checking whether the Android app can play the video, it could also be an extra check after it goes to the Chromecast. This check may be overridden in the plex.js or maybe it is somewhere else, unfortunately I do not speak javascript.
Another thing I would try is casting without using the Android app (there should be other ways like with a chrome plugin or something)
It looks like this is probably restricted to ARM devices because other users in those threads mention they are using NAS servers which are officially supported by Plex.

After applying the plex.js fix, I can play the same video in both, the Android app and in Chrome.
Casting the video using either of them, I get the error message. I guess there is another check after it goes to Chromecast.

There must be another check, I wish I could help you more but I don't know javascript. You can try opening the plex.js and searching for the error message you see on the Chromecast, maybe you can see where to add another return false to override it.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for your post. I was also wondering about this - whether the Chromecast fetches it's own plex.js from the http://www.plex.tv server and tried blocking it in the firewall of my router. However, this block only works for HTTP, unfortunately plex uses HTTPS.
That would mean I have to block the access directly on the Chromecast? Or to try unrooting my router so that I have access to iptables?
I keep the post here for reference and will also post in the other thread.
Edit: http://chromecast.plex.tv/production/js/plex.js
The following 2 IPs seem to be linked to it:
104.20.6.9
104.20.7.9
I will try in the next few days whether I can redirect this address to a local webserver with a modified plex.js.

In case you aren't subscribed to the other thread, I posted a guide in progress in the other thread that should work.
