Hi everybody,
I set up a banana pi following this instructions:
http://www.htpcguides.com/rebuild-banani...r-support/
I pluged in 3 hard drive form type Western Digital Caviar Green 1.0 TB, where 2 drive are joined to a RAID1.
I wanted to start a long SMART test with the smartmontools and every test was interrupted by the host due to a reset of the drive.
I checked the load cycle count from the day before and this day and I recognized a difference from 150. I cannot imagine why the hard drive are resetting all the time.
Perhaps anyone here could help?
Thanks in advance
Cyclone

I don't believe you can use SMART because it is not a true sata port, it's a USB to sata bridge

Thanks for the quick reply Mike,
I can use SMART. I've saved the SMART reports on another machine and the values from the banana are fitting to this values.
I can even start a test. But every test aborts at 90% remaining. I even tried a short test which aborted at 10% remaining.

Hmm that is interesting, I was pretty sure you couldn't run SMART tests on the Banana Pi.
Were you able to run the SMART test without the port multiplier?
How have you RAIDed the drives?

I didn't test if SMART was possible without the port multiplier, sorry. But by the way: I often run tests via a USB-bridge and it works well
I created the RAID with mdadm.

Would you be able to test if SMART works without the port multiplier?
Can you tell me which smartmontests you are running?

Good morning Mike,
Sorry for the late reply. I will test the SMART ability without the multiplier this week and let you know if it works.

Hey Mike,
without the port multiplier the SMART-tests are working fine. I completed a short test and now a long test is running. It seems that the port multiplier is the problem...

Thank you for the update cyclone
It must be something like the port multiplier isn't able to route SMART requests to specific drives, it is after all more of a 'hub' (like a network hub) than a 'switch' (network switch).
I wonder if it is that specific model multiplier, the kernel or something else entirely.
