hi, i am setting up a raspberry pi2 for a friend. the ideal for him is raspbian with installed kodi, mounted an external hd and a samba share (and maybe transmission torrent too).
so i placed raspbian jessie on a fresh sd and i installed kodi (followed htpc guides).
the problem is that once i am in kodi and go to the shutdown menu i would expect that selecting "exit" would bring me back to raspbian desktop. instead kodi closes and i am stuck with a black screen (raspberry is still on, if i ssh i can lauch the raspbian desktop).
exiting kodi shouldn't bring me back to raspbian desktop? is there anything i can do to try to fix this problem?
thanks

No distro with Kodi on it does that that I'm aware of (Raspbmc and OSMC do not) and it isn't desirable either because Kodi runs in its own GUI and not on top of existing GUIs.
It is probably possible to install your own desktop environment and then start that manually after exiting Kodi.

all right, thank you.
i installed kodi on raspbian jessie and since i saw i can lauch kodi from the raspbian desktop, i thought i could simply close it to go back to desktop.

I honestly have never tried, it may be possible but my understanding was Kodi starts its own thing.
Did you find a workaround?

i did install kodi from raspbian jessie repository
kodi can be lauched from raspbian desktop UI.
once in kodi, from the shutdown menu there are 3 entries: shutdown, restart and exit.
exit is supposed to brings you back to raspbian desktop UI. unfortunately sometimes it works and sometimes you're stack to a black screen.
plenty of blogs about the "black screen" problem when exiting kodi installed in raspbian, didn't have the time to read but looks like a solution to the problem is possible (modify the script associated to the "exit" choice).

If you are able to find the exit script you can tell it to execute the command you use to run the desktop from the command line. Should be straightforward if you can find the file with the exit command.

If the exit to desktop works in Windows and in Ubuntu, why isn't it working on the Pi? When hitting [ctrl]+[alt]+[F1] or [F2] to get out of the black screen, I can see the desktop for a split second before the command prompt displays. I've been reading it's a framebuffer issue. I wonder if specifically setting the framebuffer in the /boot/config.txt would fix that.

I figured it out... kinda. Once you're at the black screen after selecting exit from Kodi's menu, press [ctrl]+[alt]+[F8], then press [ctrl]+[alt]+[F7]. [F8] makes it flicker, showing the desktop for a split second, [F7] then brings the desktop back.. with whatever files you had open still open, so it's not just a new desktop session. Would be nice if that could be added to the kodi.desktop script.

I am glad you got it working. I honestly don't know know if it would be added, most people with Pi Kodi clients don't use the desktop environment as far as I know instead using the Pi as a media center appliance.

Somebody at Raspberry Pi forums shared their script with me... works flawlessly.

As for using a desktop environment... my uncle got me into this Kodi community, and he has a Chromebox.. dual-booting with ChromeOS and Kodi. I like the fact he can pull up a browser for his email, or whatever else he needs to surf for. On his tv. I don't wan't a dual-boot though, so this was the next best thing. And if Skype ever gets figured out... then that's another reason for a desktop. There's an app to run MS x86 apps on Arm, but it's $40+ CAD. It seems to work though... at least on youtube.
