How do you guys restart your network over SSH?
I found this:
sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0
Do I get any advantages to modify that to:
sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo sleep 5 && sudo ifup eth0

Well, when you do ifconfig eth0 up you are only changing that specific interface so it's very quick and effective.
I tend to use the sledgehammer approach of restarting the whole networking service which I think restarts other interfaces and processes related to it.

Hi
I need som help/advice..
My rpi2 works good. But sometimes, don't know the reason. The network drops (external), I can't ping external sites as google (DNS name) or 8.8.8.8 (IP address) I can ping my router and I can take control over the pi over ssh. But no external access.
I have tried:
- sudo service networking restart
- sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo ifup eth0
- sudo ifdown eth0 && sudo sleep 5 && sudo ifup eth0
I get the answer that I will get a renewal within 1500 sec or something like that. ??
The only thing that works at the moment is a reboot. (what I know)
I'm a uptime junky and I don't like to reboot my pi. Would like to resolve this by restarting "something" else or a service. But I don't know what. 8-)
any ideas?

manne you still running a VPN with that provider I had never heard of that was dropping connection quite often? It could be the provider or OpenVPN the software or your router as @tragidy points out.
I have had the same Pi 2 connected for many months and never need to reboot it (running the same Minibian you are)

The VPN-provider works good. (as far as I know) If it drops shouldn't I stil have access to the external network through my ISP?
I can try to restart the openvpn service next time the external network drops.
Well, It could be the router from my ISP. But when it happens I stil have access on my other devices.
I wish there was log like the "eventwvr" on windows that I could see date, time and what or indication of what it could be. The only indication I can see is in sonarrs logs, I can see when the warnings/errors starts and get a time stamp from there.

Yes you should, are you using the remote access behind VPN method to keep your routes for your home network?
