I thought I would create a new thread where I could ask for help as I progress through setting up my system. I have run the Media Server Installer Image and it appears as if everything went well. I installed several programs, but have not configured them yet. I was thinking I should make a backup before I do anything else so if anything goes wrong I can start from this point again. I'm just not sure how I do that. I would like to store the backup on my Windows PC. What is the best way to create and backup and store it on that PC?
The other question I have at this stage is about powering the my Toshiba 2.5" USB HDD via the Pi. I thought this would probably be the best thing to do first (then mount it after that). I was going to use this guide to get the Pi to power the HDD:
http://www.htpcguides.com/power-2-5-hard...erry-pi-b/
However, after entering the very first command I struck something weird.
I entered:
sudo blkid
I expected to get something like this:
/dev/mmcblk0p1: SEC_TYPE="msdos" LABEL="boot" UUID="787C-2FD4" TYPE="vfat"
/dev/mmcblk0p2: UUID="3d81d9e2-7d1b-4015-8c2c-29ec0875f762" TYPE="ext4"
As the guide said it would only show the SD card partitions. However, I did not get a "LABEL="boot" partition, but I DID get my USB drive. This is what it displayed:
/dev/mmcblk0p1: UUID="36579ef7-310f-4c75-88ae-62f546aab526" TYPE="ext4"
/dev/sda1: LABEL="TOSHIBA EXT" UUID="C2FA1F0BFA1EFB7D" TYPE="ntfs"
In addition to this my HDD has a white light.
I am really confused about this. Firstly I'm concerned because I did not get a "boot" partition and secondly I am not sure what I need to do now that it has already detected it (and appears to be powering it).
Do I continue with the guide as per normal? Or do I need to do something different now?
Also, just out of interest, after I get this setup, what order should I do the next steps? I was thinking:
Power USB HDD (which I am currently doing)
Mount NTFS USB Drive to Pi
Setup Samba so it can be shared to Windows
Setup sharing with Kodi (was thinking FTP, but I'm not sure how to do this)
Setup spin down and power management
Once all of this is running smoothly I'll then begin the process or automating my tv and movie downloads.
Does that order look ok?
Thanks for your help guys. I'm sure I'm going to have a LOT more questions!
