Yup looks like that was issue! I wonder why openvpn crashed and did not automatically restart with the openvpn.conf file that is stated in the guide. Here is what I get now:
Code:
}root@minibian:~# sudo service openvpn stop
root@minibian:~# sudo service openvpn start
root@minibian:~# sudo -u vpn -i -- curl 52.58.218.7
{
"ip": "179.43.177.162",
"hostname": "foc08.folhetoespecial.com",
"city": "Zurich",
"region": "Zurich",
"country": "CH",
"loc": "47.3667,8.5500",
"org": "AS51852 Private Layer INC",
"postal": "8010"
}root@minibian:~#curl ipinfo.io
{
"ip": "XXXXXXX",
"hostname": "XXXXXXXX.comcast.net",
"city": "XXXXX",
"region": "XXXX",
"country": "US",
"loc": "XXXXXXXXX",
"org": "AS7922 Comcast Cable Communications, Inc.",
"postal": "XXXXX"
root@minibian:~# sudo -u vpn -i -- curl ipinfo.io
{
"ip": "179.43.177.162",
"hostname": "foc08.folhetoespecial.com",
"city": "Zurich",

"country": "CH",
"loc": "47.3667,8.5500",

"postal": "8010"
Just a follow up. Restarted a couple times and everything is working great! Thanks for the help! Now on to part two!

Great to see that it is working for you! Did you check that dns is set properly too?
When I'm home I will look into the Minibian version of the guide and see the details.

apt-utils
iptables
curl
resolvconf
openvpn
I will try the transmission setup tonight.
Thanks for the help

The minibian guide would be identical to the Ubuntu guide, plus installing the packages above, minus the upstart part.

Yup
Code:
pi@minibian:~$ sudo -u vpn -i -- cat /etc/resolv.conf
[sudo] password for pi:
# Dynamic resolv.conf(5) file for glibc resolver(3) generated by resolvconf(8)

I am now unable to reach the web gui for transmission after installing it and trying to configure it for miniban.
Pretty sure the service is running:
Code:
systemctl status transmission-daemon.service

Drop-In: /etc/systemd/system/transmission-daemon.service.d

Status: "Idle."
CGroup: /system.slice/transmission-daemon.service
└─6578 /usr/bin/transmission-daemon -f --log-error -g /etc/transmi...
pi@minibian:/etc/init$
Here is my settings.json
Code:
"rpc-enabled": true,
"rpc-password": "{98509890d5368e8f1dfc48e64afea1530b0ce148NU8LlCd3",

But when I try to access web gui:

You need to install nginx reverse proxy, as described in the guide, to be able to access Transmission. Just follow the steps from the guide and it will work.

Success!
If I could make a small suggestion to the guide online. Move the part about Torguard checking transmission IP to the bottom of the guide instead of between transmission and nginx install. I was just following step by step and I could not get to the transmission webgui before nginx install.
Looking great.
I am going to see if I can test the kill switch of vpn while downloading a torrent. Would it be as simple as start downloading a torrent then while downloading execute
Code:
sudo service openvpn stop
Then check to see if transmission stops downloading?

Well done sharkaccident
@nuddyd made a similar comment so I will move that now as you suggest, no need to confuse things
Yes stop the OpenVPN service and your kill switch should take effect.
