I will have a go at deluge again soon. I don't have it installed right now, so I can't give you the output atm. Would be great if you can post the steps needed for systemd. Thanks

When possible, always use the repo mentioned in the guide, especially if the given repo is the official one (like it is in case of OpenVPN too). Ubuntu (and Debian) have very outdated version in their own repository, and installation might differ too if you use the Ubuntu repo.
As for Deluge: follow the Ubuntu 14.x guide, make sure you use the Deluge PPA, not the Ubunut repo, set the required permission. Instead of the upstart scripts use the following systemd units:
Code:
sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/deluged.service
Copy and paste
Code:
[Unit]
Description=Deluge Bittorrent Client Daemon
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=vpn
Group=vpn
UMask=007
ExecStart=/usr/bin/deluged -d -l /var/log/deluge/daemon.log -L warning
Restart=on-failure
# Configures the time to wait before service is stopped forcefully.
TimeoutStopSec=300
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Enable deluged.service unit
Code:
systemctl enable /etc/systemd/system/deluged.service
For web-ui
Code:
sudo nano /etc/systemd/system/deluge-web.service
Code:
[Unit]
Description=Deluge Bittorrent Client Web Interface
After=network-online.target
[Service]
Type=simple
User=vpn
Group=vpn
UMask=027
ExecStart=/usr/bin/deluge-web -l /var/log/deluge/web.log -L warning
Restart=on-failure
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Code:
systemctl enable /etc/systemd/system/deluge-web.service
This should do the job, and don't forget that you need nginx reverse proxy configured to access Deluge web-ui (as outlined in the guide).

I have tried to get it working again a few days ago with nginx entries but the webui remains unreachable. Transmission is working fine for now, I'll have another go at deluge if you can tell me; what exactly makes deluge so much better than transmission?

Hi Gompy, how is the new rig functioning?
i use Deluge on Ubuntu Server 16.04, with Split VPN and nginx LE, and it is working very nice and stable, never ever had any problems. We will finalize the Deluge for systemd services guide very soon, I just have to solve some problems when using on Debian (Debian and its systemd integration is terrible). However, on Ubuntu, when you use the Deluge PPA, there are no systemd, init.d or any other units installed by default, but you need to create the one for yourself. Which is in my opinion very good, however makes things for users somewhat more difficult. But it gives you the freedom to do what every you want, and no need to edit, override some quite bad default values. This is one reason Deluge is very advanced. Once I'm ready with the Deluge for Ubuntu 16 part of the guide, I will post it here in the forum and you can then follow and even test it, which would be great to have your feedback.
Deluge vs Transmission: it is really a matter of personal preference. Transmission is popular since it is the default client in almost all of the Linux distributions. Deluge is aimed much more at advanced users, it has many advanced features, and a variety of really excellent plugins. I use many of these features, and could not imagine to do without it. However, Transmission is also great, it does the job perfectly fine and reliable, so for those who don't need any of Deluge's advanced features or plugins, there is really no need to not use Transmission.
Whit Deluge you can make automation and integration very easy and you can basically do almost everything with the torrents (label, auto label, move to when finished, extract, copy, set seed time per tracker, label, content type, and so much more). i would say, if you want a fully automated system to manage your torrents, and you are using private trackers, Deluge is way better choice then Transmission. I guess some of these things can be done in Transmission too, but it is always so much more difficult, and while my experience with Deluge is "set it, and it works, forget about it", with Transmission I always have to experiment a lot to achieve some things that in Deluge are only two clicks. Speaking of, Deluge can be used in a ThinClient mode, which I actually use a lot and like it.
At the end, it comes down to your personal preferences and needs, Transmission, Deluge and rTorrent all have their devoted base.
Please wait for the guide, and then you can try out Deluge and see it for yourself. I hope I was able to help you a little.

Hi Drake,
First of all, the new rig is awesome. Transcoding performance is great. I had it run 5 concurrent streams 3 of which where HEVC transcodes and two direct streams. Hence, half of the time the transcoded streams were throttled, meaning the rig was ahead transcoding
As for deluge, I'll look in to it again sometime. For now transmission is set up to do everything I need it to do. Yes, it does take some tinkering, but once you have it set up it just does the job.
Thanks for the help. Appreciate it

Glad to hear that you are satisfied with the new rig. I am also very happy with it, it is ideal for a low power, still quite powerful home server. And I think the price is really acceptable, especially if you look at how nice it performs.
As for Deluge: the guide should be ready soon. I finally managed to work out the systemd override on Debian 8 (Ubuntu is much easier), and now we are basically polishing the guide.
Would you like to test it perhaps? That would also help us to get your feedback on the guide? Let me know, and I will send oyu here in the forum the relevant part for Ubuntu.
