hi,
i will follow the steps from the guide "Remote Access Transmission Torrent Behind VPN on Linux".
i'll back up my sd card before that, nevertheless there are a few things i want ask before proceed:
1)"Configure Transmission Daemon with OpenVPN"
in this part of the tutorial it says to Change rpc-whitelist to false. is that necessary only if i want to access transmission outside my lan? (so that if i don't need it, i can stay with
"rpc-whitelist" 192.168.*.* and leave rpc-whitelist to true) or is it compulsory in any case to set rpc-whitelist to false if i want transmission torrent to use a vpn?
2)not sure from the tutorial if i should or shouldn't "replace all instances of transmission-daemon in the torrentvpn.sh and torrentvpnstop.sh with just transmission".
I installed transmission following htpc guides tutorial and i did not use upstart method
3)since i won't instal upstart i should skip the part where it says to write the file "/etc/init/openvpnsafe.conf" and i just add the blue part to /etc/rc.local
4)to instal open vpn, since i installed transmission from jessie repository (i am on wheezy), should i use:
sudo apt-get install openvpn unzip -y
or
sudo apt-get install -t jessie openvpn unzip -y?
5)last one,
following the tutorial, only transmission will be using the vpn? plex media server will not and will still be reachable outside my lan at my static IP?
thank you

I commend you @stefano_p for doing prep work before you dive in. The guide is a bit advanced so it's good to clarify before proceeding.
1. This should be ok because the incoming request should still be seen as coming from inside your LAN since your router is forwarding the packet. I could be wrong though so for testing purposes you can make it false and after you confirm it's working try with the current whitelist.
2. Leave transmission-daemon if you did not install upstart
3. Yes you will use rc.local
4. If installing without -t jessie works then just use that openvpn. It is possible that using the jessie version may add new dependencies that could conflict with other software. If you get an error then use -t jessie.
5. No, everything goes through the VPN, the route may let you still use plex but I fear it may not because of plex.tv and other silly things they do (if you don't use plex.tv and only your static IP you should be OK). I will be publishing a guide on how to access plex behind the VPN on Linux in the future after exams. Do let me know if it works for you though.

thank you for the quick reply.
on point 5: i have couch potato and sickbear running too on the same raspberry, will they still function if i run the vpn?
regarding plex, if i can access remotely via my static IP then i'm fine. i would like to be able to access plex remotely with client app too. no need for plex.tv
i'll let you know when i try to install open vpn.
telling the truth, i m still unsure whether it is worth or not to use a vpn.
if it is used for an anonymity purpose, i have the feel that it could potentially cause more trouble than help.
if it is for security reasons, not sure either

@stefano_p: Why not install OpenVPN and run it on the whole machine and try it and see how it works?
I skipped the part to use vpn only with transmission and use it on everything instead. It works for me
Good luck

@manne you still have remote access to couchpotato and sickrage/sonarr?
@stefano_p vpns are a very good idea if you use torrents, there has been a lot of external pressure on governments so it's better to be safe than sorry

Nope, I don't need to access my system remotely. Only local access at the moment.

I followed the tutorial and after some initial panic where nothing was working, then i realized I made a stupid mistake (the way i wrote the server i chose) and now everything looks like it's working fine.
internet speed seems a bit slower though, but it's fine.
not sure, but it doesn't look like plex is going through vpn too.
thanks for the help

update,
plex media server (pms) is going through the vpn. problem is pms is not longer accessible from outside my network.
actually, it is accessible from a web browser at my external IP address, but any other client app (like a plex app for mobile phone) cannot connect to pms when outside my network.
i read there are some workaround to access pms under vpn from outside network, based on letting Plex's IP addresses to bypass VPN:
https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/3...h_pia_vpn/
https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/3..._internet/
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/commen...ent_838586
definitely far from my ability/knowledge, nevertheless i might give it a try.

That is what I thought would happen @stefano_p the apps use plex.tv and things are routed differently then. Ideally you would be able to specify the server manually (point to your external IP) instead of using plex.tv. Plex.tv is only useful if you use account sharing.
