what do i need to put into fstab so that i can use my usb pen drive in any of the USB ports on the Pi?
without having to mount it every time i want to use it.
i want to be able to use it just like i would on windows or osx - ie plug it in and it becomes available without any other user intervention.

i'll always be mounting it to /mnt/usbstick.
the file system will always be exFat.
not sure if that makes any difference to what might be required.

well the pi is at one site, and i'm at another.
so i bring files on a usb stick to it and want to simply plug it in without having to manually mount it every time.

Hmm what kind of files? Is there some reason they must be on the USB stick? Can't you use Syncthing or something similar to sync them?

Could you explain the use case in more depth?
The only reason I can think to do this is if the device from which you are copying files on to the USB stick is not on the same network as the Pi. Is that the case?
I just tested usb tools and it should do what you want, I plugged in a usb stick and it was automounted in /media/usb. When I took it out and plugged it into a different USB port it was mounted in /media/usb0. I plugged it back into the original USB port and it was again automounted in /media/usb

they are in totally different physical locations - so yes totally different networks and geographically in different locations.
(i did say that in post 5)
your test resulted in it being mounted to a different mount point though.
that's not what i want, i want it to be mounted to the same mount point regardless of which usb port i plug it in to.

I see that you said it in post 5 but I am struggling to see why you can't use rsync over ssh to synchronize the files or some other networked solution, is it a security/firewall issue, is one of the devices not on the internet?
When I did the quick test I put it in the top left USB port, checked mount point, plugged into bottom left USB port and mount point was different, when I moved it back to top left USB port I was in the original mount point.
There is that option of the hacky way I posted earlier in post #4, does that work?
